March 11th, 2010The high school experience would not be complete without the opportunity for students to participate in various sports and extracurricular activities. It is recognized the the high school years are an important transition period in the overall development and maturation of a teenager into a well-rounded and confident adult.
Developing responsibility, independence, communication and leadership skills are traits that students should have the opportunity to strengthen or acquire in their school environment and through participation in school activities.
For these reasons Pope John Paul II high school will strive to make a wide range sports programs available to its students. Sports and competitive athletic teams will be an integral component of the activities available to students at Pope John Paul II high school. In the first year we would anticipate fielding teams in soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis and possibly cross country. For the first year these teams would participate at the junior varsity level. As the school increases in student numbers and additional facilities are added, other sports would be added including football, baseball, softball and track. By the third academic year we would anticipate that most sports would be competing at the varsity level.
Affiliation with an established area/ regional sports conference will be pursued and is anticipated. Catholic schools participating in the NC High School sports association have a long tradition of competing very successfully in their divisions. We will strive for the same degree of success from our sports teams.
The coaching staff will include volunteers from the faculty, parents and community volunteers. Already several potential coaches have offered their services including an experienced athletic director. A booster club with strong parental support will be essential to the sports program particularly with transportation needs and on-field assistance (scorekeeping etc.)
At this time all sports programs are anticipated as being revenue neutral. Expenses may be offset through game ticket sales, concessions, team fundraising, sponsorships, and if necessary small contributions from student/ player families.
